　　一九三一年初，一位误打误撞成为间谍的商界奇才关郁达(后化名韩山)。在经历了被追杀、与新婚妻子(左小青饰)生离后，化名打入日本特务机关。再次与妻子重逢，因使命在身无法相认。当军统特务方堃(吴刚饰)爱上妻子后痛不欲生。在大爱与小爱的抉择中，这位中共特工凭借惊人的毅力和超乎常人的智慧与敌人展开了殊死斗争。在胜利前夜，用鲜血换来了亲人的理解和谅解。

　　本剧向人们讲述了四个不同时代的女子的爱情及婚姻，反映出爱情、婚姻关系随着时代的变化而变迁的过程。
　　清朝末年，千金小姐魏瑜凤（佘诗曼 饰）知书识礼，与家中厨师余赐（马德钟 饰）自小青梅竹马一起长大，两人暗生情愫。可惜后来魏家衰落，瑜凤被迫嫁给了太史家的二世祖汪毓麟。毓麟挥霍无度，很快将家业败光。这时余赐已经拜了御厨为师，学习厨艺，他想带着瑜凤离开重新开始。瑜凤不忍看见汪家就此衰落，于是将余赐送给自己的玉筷子卖了，开办了一家小食肆——凤凰楼。后来瑜凤和余赐双双在事故中身亡。凤凰楼见证了两人未结果的爱情。
　　五四时期，瑜凤的女儿子君（佘诗曼 饰）喜欢上了已经有了未婚妻的青年教师李吉祥（马德钟 饰）。子君不想像母亲那样只留一段未结果的爱情就过世，于是一直在向吉祥表白自己的心迹。吉祥终于被打动了，两人一起私奔到了天津。可惜，随后两人分手了，吉祥投身革命，而子君则回家打理凤凰楼。最后，两人发现仍深爱对方，可惜吉祥不得不再次离开革命，留下了子君母女。
