　　本纪录片取材于野生动物保护主义者蒂莫西·崔德威尔（Timothy Treadwell）1999～2003年在美国阿拉斯加州卡特迈国家公园及自然保护区所拍摄的素材。崔德威尔从1989年起致力于野生灰熊的研究和保护，并与朋友成立了“熊人协会”，每年夏天来到卡特迈独自野营，观察记录灰熊的生活习性，并义务对数千名学童进行讲解，呼吁社会打击偷猎，关注、保护灰熊。导演沃纳·赫尔佐格（Werner Herzog）探访了崔德威尔的父母和前女友，并对2003年10月崔德威尔及女友艾米·胡格纳德（Amie Huguenard） 之死的细节进行了细致采访描绘，试图在展示崔德威尔非凡经历的同时，回答究竟是什么使他选择远离人类放逐荒野，将生命献给灰熊。

　　《极限旅行》将旅行主题不断深入，邀请不同的嘉宾在同一个旅行地往返于“极乐”与“极恶”之间，感受完全相反的趣味，展现对旅行地不同的感受，以此让观众了解到当地真正的样貌。
　　节目采用演播室观察讨论与旅行真人秀纪实相结合的形式进行，演播室现场朴明秀、姜智英、李恩智、曹世镐担任主持人，观看各自与其明星嘉宾一道完成的旅行纪实。节目中，主持人们分别与各自的明星嘉宾组队，前往世界各地知名旅行地展开沉浸式旅行体验。首期节目朴明秀搭档街舞明星佳菲，前往中国重庆体验游玩，首先完成了对朴明秀而言是“极恶”而对佳菲来说是“极乐”的蹦极体验，在极与极之间感受山城重庆魅力。

　　“在内容不景气的时代，我们想知道如何增加成功的机会，“CP孙昌宇说，”基于tvN《Channae Tour》的成功，我们决定制作一档旅游节目。2017 年，我在做'Channae Tour'时关注的关键词是'性价比'和'小奢华'，但如今，我看到的是多巴胺关键词。我不断看到一些非常恐怖和极端的东西，但我认为，只有极端的旅游线路预订量不会很好。所以我想，如果我们把从最糟糕到最好的东西都包括进来，这将是一次平衡的极限之旅。"他解释了这个项目的初衷，即关注如何释放多巴胺，逃离自由的生活，而不是关注金钱。
